Same as with human medicine. Not sure what the driver is for people to want to use treatments for which there is no data . . . Bee stings for multiple sclerosis etc. and this is even less regulated in veterinary medicine. Personally, I want placebo controlled randomized clinical trial data . . .

Another supplement notion we encounter is the idea that the horse naturally supplements his diet to correct a deficiency (such as eating dirt, wood, an entire salt block)..because the horse KNOWS he needs the trace whatever.
When I overindulge in chocolate, what nutritional deficiency is my body trying to correct?

One argument for supplementation I've heard repeatedly is for the hard core athletes- that the eventers and endurance horses need more minerals, vitamins, amino acids, etc. Well, makes sense, but...they *eat more*....so they *get* more simply by consuming more food.

Is this really useful? My horse has colic problems last year. I tried many equine medication like Abprazole 700. It pretty much worked for ulcers.

These are two good tests for claims such as those for Adequan. Is there another more generic list of very simple questions like this that should be applied to all such claims? A simple pass/fail answer to a set of maybe five such questions might be a good bullsh*t indicator.

** "I mean, really, if a drug could really prevent arthritis, do you think that they’d focus on marketing it for horses?"
** "And, really, do you think that you’re going to read about the study in a magazine that’s sponsored by the company?"

Dear Dr. Ramey: I once was at a barn where a jumper named Lapis Lazuli was stabled. He would refuse blue jumps, and spook at other blue things (ironic considering his name, and problematic since in the country that we lived in at the time tended to have blue farm equipment). The owner consulted a horse psychic who relayed that Lapis said that his issue with the color blue was a family matter that he did not wish to discuss...

"Joint maintenance" is a practice that is more than harmless - I'm aware of a couple of horses that have died as a result of complications from "maintenance" injections. If there's no known benefit, there's no reason to take the risk. Further, giving indiscriminate medications is no substitute for good riding, good training, and proper veterinary medical diagnosis.
