The old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” is largely true. When it comes to prevent the disease problems of horses, there are some fairly effective strategies. Tools such as vaccination, deworming, and care of your horse’s teeth are demonstrably useful, in many instances.
That said, more is not necessarily better. Over time, from a combination of legitimate concern and inadequate knowledge (a dangerous mix), many recommendations have been made that are either unnecessary, or ineffective. While it’s a good idea to spend money to help keep your horse healthy, it’s not a good idea to waste money pursuing needless treatments. Separating fact from fiction will keep your horse healthier, and you wealthier!
